Today I wanted to share 5 ways to be closer to your spouse, because it is important in a marriage.
closer to spouse

My husband and I were high school sweethearts  (& college sweethearts) before we were married.  We have now been married for ten years and we have four children together.   I write a lot about marriage, because I think that keeping your marriage a priority it very important.

Here are 5 ways that I have found to keep our marriage strong:

1- Bring him into my interests.
I talk about my interests…  working out, my job as a play therapist, the kid’s playdates…  so I love to have him on board with it.
For example, when talking about working out: I like to find healthy meal options that we can prepare together (he loves to cook).  I love to show him what I’ve done at the gym (while he laughs at my uncoordinated moves) and to talk to him about my classes, etc…  It keeps him involved.

2- Listen to HIS interests.
I listen to him talk about work, even though I don’t know any of the people that he is talking about.  I just listen, like I would listen when a friend was talking.

3- Treat your spouse like a houseguest.
Offer to get him a drink when you get one.  Offer to grab him a blanket if he looks cold.   Just simple things to let him know that you care.

4- Send him text messages throughout the day.
I send my husband about ten texts a day- just simple things like “Love you” or “Miss you” or even little pictures of the kids playing.  I just him to know that we are thinking about him, even when he isn’t here.

5- Let him relax a little after work.
This one is HARD for me.  I have been home all day with the kids and I am ready to hand off the towel to him, but I have to remember that he has just put in 10-12 hours at work, too.   I usually do need his help right away when he gets home, but if he and the kids want to snuggle up to watch a show for 15 minutes instead of helping in the kitchen, that works, too.  (The kids need that snuggle/relax time as much as he does!)

  1. My h<3sband and I desperately need this right now. 5 kids including an infant and we are swamped in bills with diapers and laundry to the roof. We too often forget to even look at each other.

  2. I wish everyone good luck who enters! My hubby and I have been struggling and I think we could definitely use this. The five ways to be closer to your spouse post really opened my eyes. I will have to give it a try! Thanks for those tips!
