one on one time kids

About two years ago, I saw a change in our oldest.  It didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen.  He went from wanting to do play dough and coloring with me to want to watch basketball and football games with his dad.   I had to make a choice:  Lose him slowly or do what he was doing.

I have made that decision two more times so far… with our other two sons.

For Jack, it was sports.  Now, let me tell you how I feel about sports.  I mean… I played them, but I wasn’t good.  I knew it, but I liked my friends & I had fun, so I didn’t care.   I liked playing sports.  Watching them is a whole new topic.  I like watching my kids play and I liked watching my husband play in high school & college, but to watch strangers play just isn’t my thing.

For Beau, it was cars.  Again- I’m not a car girl.  I should be because my dad has been fixing up cars in our garage since I was little and my husband does the same now.   Well… it’s just not my thing.   Beau- he takes his little electric cars and puts them on jacks, changes the tires for other toy tires, adds pinstripes with my husband’s tape…

For Ethan:  It’s Look & Find books.  He could stare at a Look & Find a book for hours on end (not kidding).   I don’t like look & finds at all (they are as boring as a crossword puzzle for me).  Mickey loves them.

He also loves ice cream… and that’s right up my alley!  haha!

Allie… well, she’s all mine.  lol!   Dolls, babies, barbies, princesses, dress up, hairbows, nail polish… we’re pretty much twins born 30 years apart. 😉

So… decision time.  Get involved in what the boys love or let them slip through my fingers.

Well… here’s what I decided (jersey & all)
1 on 1 time with sons

If we want to be close to our kids, we do what they love.

So I watch basketball with Jack and talk about S. Curry at night (which he also named our pet), I watch Beau ride his car around and ask him questions like “Tell me why a mustang is so fast” , I search for 101 Pirates in Ethan’s book every single night when I tuck him in.   And then… out of the blue, they will say things like “I love you, Mom.”  or “I’m so glad you’re my mom.”  or “God put us together, Mom.”

Why?  Because they know that they are important to me.  They know I don’t love these things, but that I do them for them.  They appreciate it, even at their very young ages.

Even as an adult, I call my mom and talk about my interests…  and she listens.  Every time.   She always makes me feel important and that’s exactly how I want my kids to feel.   Important.  Loved.  Cherished.   I can do that by taking an interest in what they love.

So… today I am stopping at the library to get Ethan his look & find books so we can work on them when he gets home from school.

I bought Beau more electric tape so he could make a cool new pinstripe on his car and tell me all about it.

I got Jack and Mickey everything to get ready for the big game.  Mickey is the perfect example for our boys because he is so aware of scents and always wants to be sure he feels & smells fresh.  When I run to Sam’s Club & grab my groceries & everything else (using Club Pick Up) I grab these items…

Yes, I said that I bought it for Jack & Mickey.  Mickey tried Unilever Men’s Personal Care products and loved them, so now this is all they’ll use.    Jack wanted to use it, now, too, because he wants to smell “fresh” like dad.   (works for me!)

Jack’s favorite is the Dove Men+Care Charcoal It’s like a modern, crafted blend of fragrances including coriander, amber, vetiver, cinnamon, and verbena.  Jack says it smells “masculine” & it lets him be himself.   (It is a squeeze gel you later on & then rinse off).

Mickey likes the Dove Men+Care Charcoal + Clay Body Wash, 18oz.   It’s infused with clay and charcoal and formulated with Micromoisture technology for skin that’s left feeling renewed and refreshed. With the effective Dove Men+Care formula, it provides thorough cleansing and a powerful boost of freshness.

Then they both use the Degree Sport Defense Dry Spray.   It’s a long-lasting MOTIONSENSE formula goes on instantly dry for a cleaner feel. The antiperspirant deodorant has a rustic, manly scent and provides powerful odor and sweat protection-the more you move, the more it works.   It’s perfect for sports!   Degree Men Dry Spray Sport Defense contains Degree’s innovative MotionSense technology.
Here is how it works: unique microcapsules sit on the surface of your skin. When you move, friction breaks those microcapsules and they release more fragrance. So every time you move, MotionSense keeps you fresh and protected from odor. Degree. It won’t let you down.  They love it… seriously!
