I wanted to share this unique family movie night idea with you.    I love to have  movie nights with our kids!  We do this a lot.  No matter how old your children are,  they seem to always love a great family movie night- snuggling with your family (what could be better?)

A view of a family sitting on the couch watching a movie together.

We try to aim for at least one night a month when we can have family movie night.  We do our monthly special nights, but this is in addition to that, because unlike that one, everyone can be involved in this.

This idea was given to me to share on my blog and I love it.   The week before the movie night, you put everyone’s name in a hat and choose two names. The first name picked gets to select the movie.   The second name picked gets to select the snack.  (You can add more jobs if you have more kids, but we just take turns.  If your name was picked this month, it will not be in the hat next month).

You can do this every time you have movie night to avoid the sibling quarrels. Once you’ve determined who is going to be selecting the movies, you can check online for the release dates of the DVD’s you are looking for and head out to pick them up.

The last movie night that we had was picked by our oldest son and he picked Maleficent, which I was happy about!  My second son has claimed dibs on How to Train Your Dragon 2 for our next movie night!

You can also find ratings online – I just type the movie into google and hit “ratings”, to be sure that it is appropriate for our kids (even PG movies can be inappropriate, I think.)

SNACKS:

Next up was choosing the snacks for movie night. Trying to keep healthy, I found a great spread from Parents Magazine.   Some great options would be quesadillas, caramel popcorn, and fruit smoothies. The great part about it is that it was a lot cheaper than movie theatre snacks and we got to have some fun before the movies making our own snacks.

Enjoy Your Quality Time

To make it feel more like a movie theatre, you can turn off all the lights. Grab some bean bags, pillows and blankets and have a mini-camp out on the floor.   The great thing about creating your own family movie night is that you can make the night whatever you want it to be. We could pause the movie for bathroom breaks, laugh as loud as we wanted to, and sit wherever we wanted. Of course, saving money is always a bonus, as well. We had a great time and were even able to get them in bed without any issues at all. I would totally recommend this to any family looking to spend more time together.
