Summer Lesson Plans: Day 2

Hi!  I am giving you a week of lesson plans to get your summer started.  These lessons are geared towards preschoolers and young elementary aged students.  I will be giving you what we have done for math, science, reading, social studies and writing.  I hope that you can use some or all of it to jump-start your summer lessons!  Don’t let the summer go by without teaching your kids… it is a wonderful time for them to learn through play and to learn with you as their teacher!

Now, we are onto Day 2 of  our Summer Lesson Plans:

Your first activity is playing SIGHT-WORD BINGO.   YOU CAN FIND THE INSTRUCTIONS ON MY OLDER POST FOR ABC BINGO:

SCIENCE: 
Next, go online and search about the ocean with your kids.  I would type in “Kids Ocean Theme” or “Shark pictures for kids”.  You could go to  Ocean Service  or try National Geographic for kids or find another kid-friendly website.  Talk to your kids about the ocean (animals in it, fresh vs. salt…) .  Look at pictures online and talk about what you are seeing.  Tell them the facts that you are reading.  What do they find interesting?  What did they already know?

ART :
Make Scratch and Sniff Watercolor of the ocean.    Take 1 tbs unsweetened powdered drink mix (blue koolaid) and 1 tbs. warm water.  You could do a bowl for every color and let your kids share.  Give them paint brushes & white paper.  Be sure that you put a tablecloth or a plastic place-mat down to avoid a big mess).  See my post on making paint with Koolaid here.

MATH:
Add animals to your watercolor picture.   I would tell my kids “Add 1 shark to your picture.”    After they have completed that, you could say “Great!  Now add three octopus”  (“Remember kids, an octopus has EIGHT legs!”)   Once they have these drawn, you will want to ask “How many creatures do we have on our page?”
I would write the numbers down on a piece of paper (or use magnetic numbers).
WRITE or MAKE this number sentence for your kids to see: 1 + 3= 4   (If you have a dry erase board, you could have your child write  on that instead.)

MUSIC: 
Sing this song with your kids (do motions with it- hold your hand over your eyes like you are looking far):
A Sailor went to sea, sea, sea.
To see what he could see, see, see.
But all that he could see, see, see.
Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, sea, sea

Repeat this song, getting faster and faster – your kids will think it is hysterical!

OK- that should keep you busy for a day or two!  Have fun and change it up to fit your child and  your family!
