Cookies for Kids Cancer in Charlotte

This weekend, our infant daughter was hospitalized due to an allergic reaction to penicillin. While I was staying in the hospital, I thought about all of the other families that were also staying there. Some knew that their children would get better and some didn’t know if they would watch their child recover or watch their child become more sick, knowing that they could not help. I felt so sorry for those families. I prayed for those families and wanted to help. How do you ever cope with a diagnosis of childhood Cancer?

When I was in my Huntersville MOPS (mothers of preschoolers) group, we had a spokesperson from Cookies For Kids Cancer come to speak to us. She was moving and motivating and we wanted to help. This is a foundation started by the parents of Liam Witt. “Despite everything he went through, Liam always put others first. He loved unconditionally, and with all his heart.”

“Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, a 501(c)3 non profit, was founded by parents inspired by their son Liam’s battle with cancer. They were shocked to learn that the main reason over 25% of kids diagnosed with cancer do not survive is because of a lack of effective therapies. And the reason for the lack of therapies was very simple: lack of funding. They pledged to support the development of new and better treatments by giving people a simple way to get involved. Gretchen had a crazy idea for a larger-than-life bake sale with the goal of baking 96,000 cookies with friends and volunteers. The event raised over $400,000 for pediatric cancer research, but it was soon clear that something bigger than a bake sale had begun.”

Did you know that cancer claims the lives of more children annually than any other disease? It takes more lives than asthma, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis & AIDS combined?

There are many ways for you to help! Take part in one of the upcoming fundraisers, host a bake-sale, follow them on facebook to see what the newest fundraiser will be. I follow THIS FACEBOOK PAGE for the charlotte area run by Amy Christenbury & Lesa Helbein, volunteers. They have had five bake sales and they continue to add fundraisers constantly to raise money for Cookies for Kids Cancer. The last bake sale that they hosted raised over $220,000 between the three locations that they had in the local area (Blackhawk hardware, Birkdale Village and in Gastonia). You can follow the main facebook page, too.

A great upcoming fundraiser is the MOM PROM. Many of my friends attend this every year and have a blast! It is a great way to get dressed up and go out on the town with your friends (proceeds go to Cookies For Kids Cancer). There are always great prizes & giveaways, too!

You can host your own event to raise money for childhood cancer, as well.

Cookies for Kids Cancer has even been featured on The Today Show, The Food Network and SO MANY MORE (see the full list here)!
