This was initially posted earlier in the year, but with all of the electronics that your kids may have gotten today, I thought this might be useful!   Here are my top 5 free apps for young kids (well, more like 7)!

top 5 apps for young kids

I am a play therapist, so I see a lot of children (birth-three) with developmental delays (a lot of children with speech delays).   I love to take my Kindle or iPhone for the kids to try at the end of the session for some great Apps.  The kids are always drawn to my phone and they love to play on it when they get a chance!

My own children also love to play on the ipod, kindle or iphone when they can, which is why I decided to make this list for you.   If you have favorites, leave them below.  I know that I would love to try them out and I know a few kiddos that would love to give them a try, too!

Here are a few of our favorite FREE apps.

1.  Talking Tom Cat or Talking Tom Cat 2.   (Put it in kid-mode).  This little cat repeats whatever you say (perfect for play therapy or speech therapy!).  Our kids sing to it, talk to it, say silly jokes… and the cat repeats everything.  Our kids like to sing songs as fast as they can because the cat repeats everything really fast.  Its cute and hilarious!Screen Shot 2013-07-20 at 11.45.25 PM

2). Our oldest son (six years old) loves Stack the States.  They do need to be able to read, or you can read it to them.   It is very educational and they think it is so much fun!  It might be geared towards kids a little older, but I think its a great way to teach them a little bit of geography, at any age! Screen Shot 2013-07-20 at 11.41.46 PM

3).  ABC Mouse – I have about six of the ABC MOUSE books on my iPhone for the kids to play with, as well as some of the songs.  Our three year old will just “open” a book and listen to them read to him when we are driving in the car.  He really enjoys them and I like that he is learning in the car.

4). Dr. Panda – our kids LOVE this!  They like Dr. Panda Hospital and Dr. Panda Teeth.   I have heard that there is a Dr. Panda restaurant (& Dr. Panda teach me), that I know they will love, too.  Our 5 year old likes this  app the best and plays it often (mostly in the car).Screen Shot 2013-07-20 at 11.42.45 PM

5). Where’s My Water?   This one is challenging for our oldest son (and for me!).  I like it because it really makes us think about how it is going to work before we start digging.  You have to get the water into the drain by digging through the dirt, but one wrong move and all of the water is lost.  Its a great app! Screen Shot 2013-07-20 at 11.44.30 PM

6).   Bonus fun app: My Playhome Lite.  Our kids love this one, especially our three year old.  You set up the home, move things around, feed the people, play their music, put on their TV or turn the lights on and off.  It is just like playing with a doll house, but as an app (for boys and girls!) Screen Shot 2013-07-20 at 11.46.17 PM

7).   Favorite KINDLE APP: My favorite kindle-fire app, by far, is ZOODLES KID MODE.  It uploads things for them based on their ages, it locks them into that app and it is educational.  Hands down, its my favorite one.  Here is a picture of what that app looks like, because I think there are two of them, but the blue one is the best one:

8- Free Mini Monet Lite –  This is a great one for kids that are creative or like to draw, color, create!

UPDATE: I wanted to add a new one that I just found.  It is only free for the trial, but it is under $5/month for the rest.  It is called Bookboard.  It is an educational app, so I love that.  I did a review on it.  Check out the review here: Reading is fun

I also posted about a new app that our kids love: Imommyapp – here is my post about that one.

Another update:   I wanted to share a few more:  Starfall, Bible Heroes, Temple Run, Minecraft, and of course all of the Dentist & Doctor ones.
