Every few months, my family and I head to the beach. I love to find a good book to read on the beach. There were several years where I didn’t want to read a book on the beach because I was so scared to have the kids near the water that I wouldn’t dare look away. Well… I found a solution in audible. If you aren’t familiar with Audible, it is an Amazon.com, Inc. subsidiary, is the leading provider of premium digital spoken audio information and entertainment, offering customers a new way to enhance and enrich their lives every day. They offer a free trial for 30 days, too. .

Anyway, once I realized that I could do both: relax on the beach while reading and watch the kids splash in the waves, I was excited to find the perfect book. I’ve searched and read many reviews and I just landed on my next read: The Handmaid’s Tale. I am excited to get started (you should join me!). The reason that I chose this one was because I plan on reading it now and then watching it on Hulu soon (they are releasing it in late April).

The Handmaid’s Tale, written by Margaret Atwood explores important issues such as power, gender, and religious politics. This Audible book is read by Emmy Award-winning Claire Danes. She just brings it to live- she gives it more depth to the story, as you hear it through this remastered version. The best part is that the novel extends beyond the original final line, “Are there any questions?,” by adding the questions and answers that the people at that Symposium, occurring in 2195, might ask. This special edition also includes a brand-new afterword from the author. Now’s the time to revisit this classic or even discover it for the first time!

Here’s a sneak peek:

“After a staged terrorist attack kills the President and most of Congress, the government is deposed and taken over by the oppressive and all controlling Republic of Gilead. Offred, now a Handmaid serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife, can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name. Despite the danger, Offred learns to navigate the intimate secrets of those who control her every move, risking her life in breaking the rules in hopes of ending this oppression.” You can learn more about it here.

I’ve had a chance to preview this with the sample (you can listen to it here)… and I MAY have started it before the beach trip (haha!). Sometimes I just can’t wait when a good book is calling my name. I love it so much that I’m having a hard time waiting to listen to the rest, but I’m trying to wait.

Oh- and it’s not just me that has good things to say about it. Here are a few more testimonials:

“Thanks to Audible, you can now pick up a new Special Edition of The Handmaid’s Tale to get caught up to speed on the story of Offred, brought to life in this audiobook version by none other than Claire Danes. (Suddenly our heads are spinning with crossover potential.) Aside from the impressive voice acting alone, this audio update also contains new scenes that actually extend the story beyond the original last line of the novel.” (Nerdist)

“This highly pertinent, ingeniously conceived production deepens the original work and even surpasses it.” (The Washington Post)

All in all, an Audible audiobook is the perfect solution for a beach trip. I can watch the kids while I listen. Oh! One more tip is that I usually only put the earbuds in one ear, because I still like to hear what’s going on around me. It’s the perfect solution
