I have a garden, every year.
Do I like to garden?  Not really.
Do I have a green thumb?  Not even close!   (A little Miracle-Gro can solve that issue for me! haha!)
Does my husband enjoy it?  A little, but not too much.
Does the thought of bugs completely gross me out?  You bet ya!

So, why on earth do I grow a garden?
I grow a garden for our children.   I want our children to understand that we can literally ‘live off of the land.”

I was a teacher, so science is very important.  Plus, it is not something that our children are doing much of in school. No, they are busy reading, writing and working on math.  Science and history has taken a back seat, but I want to make sure that our children understand how wonderful it can be to grow your own food.

I want them to see how you can take a seed and grow something wonderful from that seed.    I don’t even understand it, but then again, who am I to question something that is clearly a blessing to everyone.

I love to watch our kids keep their science journals (every day they are writing down different things about their plants.  Every week, we take a ruler and we measure our plants!)

The best part?  I love that our kids will walk out to the garden, grab a strawberry or a pepper and take a bite.  Just like that!

Here are a few ideas to get you started teaching your kids about your garden:
garden activities for kids

1- Buy cheap journals (under $1.00)

2- Buy them a ruler

3- Let them pick three plants to grow

4- Let them be in charge of watering them  (add this to their chore list)

5- Every day let them observe the plants.

6. Write down how the plants have grown.

7. Look for bugs (gross, I know!) and then google them… find out what they are, why they are here and how long they will stay.

8. Make new recipes and let your kids help you!

9. Create an experiement.  One time I used Miracle-Gro on my whole garden, but then I put one pepper plant alone, not near that garden and we watched how the Miracle-Gro garden grew faster and ‘better’ than the one without the nutrition.

10- Let them eat them.  Hungry for a snack?  Run out & grab something great!   Bring it in, wash it off and dig in!  Our kids LOVED this idea!   They loved growing their own food and we look forward to it every year.
