If you are looking for steps to organizing a laundry room, you’ve come to the right place! If you are just beginning our 40 days to an Organized home, start at the beginning: 40 days of organization
Day 13: organizing a laundry room
Step one: Hide what you can without taking up space.
In our laundry room, I have a “behind the door” holder. This holds all of our extra shampoos, soaps, deodorants, etc…
It makes it easy for us to grab it and easy to keep everything hidden away without taking up space.
Step two: Invest in cabinets or shelving: (does not have to be expensive!)
We have two sets of cabinets in our laundry room: one above our “folding table” and by our washer and dryer. They are very useful and shelves would work just as well.
You can get kitchen cabinets VERY cheap at somewhere like habitat for humanity or at the Lowes sidewalk sales. If you want to know how to get this stuff at the “rock- bottom” prices, make sure that you read my post on decorating for less.
Our cabinets hold our cleaning supplies on one side and our laundry detergent on the other side.
Here is a little inspiration…

I love this large shelf beside the washer & dryer, if you can’t have a small shelf above the washer.

Step 3: Where to keep your laundry baskets:
I keep my laundry baskets in two spots under our folding table:
1- A stack of them for when I am ready to fold (four baskets in a stack, waiting for me to just pull them out, fold & sort).
I also have one big laundry basket that everyone uses for their dirty clothes. Easy enough.
Here are some great ideas for organizing your baskets if you wanted to sort them by person or by color:

A cabinet would make a beautiful way to keep your baskets organized.

Step 4: Folding and Ironing:
We have a folding table in our laundry room. It is great for folding clothes, quickly (although because I am so short at only 4’11, I usually have a harder time using it, so I take our clothes into my bedroom & fold them there so that I can fold & sort them into my baskets: See my post on making laundry easier (ready to be sorted & put away)
The folding table works out great for most people! Here is ours (with our ‘MISSING SOCKS’ BASKET ON TOP)
This one is great. It is easy to find a shelf or table like this & its easy to use.

As for the Ironing station… We keep our iron behind or door. It takes up no space when it is folded & cleans up easily.

STEP 5: ADD A toilet and sink to your laundry room.
Our laundry room doubles as an extra bathroom. We have four kids (making us a family of six), so it works out to have this extra toilet- especially when they become teenagers! It has a sink and toilet in there, so our kids can use it when they need an extra bathroom.
Step 6:
Find a spot for hanging things: I use two spots…
Now for my favorite step…
Step 7: DECORATE!
I love the ocean look, so this one was a hit for me:

Pick what works for your family!
I hope that helped! Organizing your laundry room is all about making it work for you and your family!

Thanks for recently stopping by Oh My Heartsie Reviews. I love this post, it gives me a few new ideas. However, it would be nice to have a folding table or counter area and the idea of the over the door ironing board. Thanks for sharing. Karren
Thank you for sharing your nifty project with us! Come by again next week and link up another awesome project!
Have a good week!

Thanks for linking up at Fabulously Frugal Thursday. My laundry room is in the basement, and there’s not much I can do with it decorating-wise. However, I think I may change my sorting system a little. I went with what I have for baskets for the kids’ rooms. I should get smaller baskets for them and put the sorted clothes into them when I’m finished. This will make it easier for each child to take their clothes upstairs. Thanks for getting me to look at my laundry in a whole new way.
Good thinking! I’m sure that will make it faster/easier. 🙂 Good luck.
I really need to get organized with our laundry!! We are 5 in our family and our problem are the towels!! My teenage boy uses one clean towel for his daily shower and although he does his own laundry he has a mountain of them in his room!! What I did was to take out all the old towels and just leave 2 towels for him, 1 towel for my daughter, 1 for the baby and 3 towels for mom and dad. The socks is not and issue for us, everyone takes care of their own socks. I use a mesh bag for the baby’s socks and I take care of my husbands socks. Thanks for the ideas of organizing laundry room I will put them to the test.
Looks like you have a great plan ready to go! 🙂 (good idea on the mesh bag, too!)
