Hello, I am so excited to be sharing here at “Your Modern Family” and appreciate Becky letting me stop over. My name is Keri and I blog at “Living In This Season” where I share honest moments about life, DIY projects, recipes, organization tips, and lots of activities for the kids.  Today I am sharing a fun activity, Melting ABCs.

I am a stay at home mom with 3 little ones (two boys ages 5 and 2 and a little girl who is 1 month old). My husband and I have been married for 9 years and are working together to try to figure out parenting and life in general!

One thing I have learned in my 5 years of being a mom is that planned activities are absolutely necessary for my kids and my sanity. In our house, too much free time equals lots of fighting and cries of “I’m bored mom!”

I recently shared a post about how we are going to aim to do one planned activity, along with our little school work time, every day in the month of July. Not every activity is shared on the blog, but I have been trying to share them on Instagram for those who are interested. The goal for these activities was for them to be simple and easy, because right now life is just a tad crazy with a newborn in our house!

One activity we did last week was Melting ABCs and it was a huge hit with my boys.

Here is what you do:

– Put plastic letters in a muffin tin (I had a bunch of those plastic magnets from the Dollar Store that worked perfectly for this)

– Fill the little tins with water

– Add food coloring to each section

– Put in freezer (I did this the night before so it was all ready for the next day)

– Take out of the freezer when ready to play and bring it outside!

Once we brought these outside my boys started to investigate them and we talked about what colors and letters they were. As the ice melted (which happened rather quickly in our SC humidity), they got excited seeing the colors on the pavement.

It was such a simple activity and a lot of fun! We love playing with ice here as it is super cheap and you can incorporate items you already have in the house! Another great activity we have done this summer was Ice Chalk.

So go pick up some ABC magnets if you don’t already have these floating around and you are set to create some simple, cheap fun for your kids this summer!
