Do you remember being in school and working with a felt board? I used to love it. I use it now, with our kids, because it is just an extension to their story. When kids read a book or listen to a story, it is always a good idea to follow that up with an extension. Here are a few examples of follow-ups:
- Ask them questions about the book and how it relates to their life “What did this story remind you of?”
- Let them tell you about the book in three parts: Beginning, Middle, Ending.
- Ask them for details about the book “Tell me three things that happened”.
- Ask for characters “Who was in this story?”
- Reenact the story with your child, using some sort of manipulative, like a felt board.
Making a felt board is easier than you think. Gather the following materials:
- Felt squares & shapes
- Scrap Fabrics, Ribbons, Buttons
- Embellishments
- Puffy paint
- Glue gun
- Firm board to attach your felt background to (like a canvas panel)
- Scissors

NEXT…
Think of the characters in your story. The example that we will be using is a girl and her dog. The story takes place in a park. Create your background and glue it down. I created a simple background out of felt and then glue-gunned it onto a flat canvas panel.
You can even buy this already-made background:
Let your children create their favorite characters! Be there to support them and help them with it, but don’t be afraid to let them run with their creativity. 
That’s all there is to it! Let your child have fun and play around with the story. Create different ending and different scenarios for your story.
