Celebrating Read Across America Week with Dr. Seuss Snacks

As a teacher & mom myself, I love reading – and Dr. Seuss’s books have always been a hit with my students. I also love knowing that so many people celebrate Read Across America Week, which started for Dr. Seuss’s Birthday.  I will share affiliate links to the recipe ingredients below. What started as a way of celebrating Dr. Seuss and his books has now become a week dedicated to help encourage kids to pick up a book and read. πŸ“š

When I taught second grade, we celebrated by having a Read Across America Parade, where the students dressed up as a character from their favorite book.  It was adorable and the kids looked forward to it all year.

Dr. Seuss’s Birthday is on March second, so Read Across America Week falls during the same week.  Most schools celebrate Read Across America Day on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, as long as it falls during the week and not on the weekend.

It is a week full of fun activities, games, and snacks in many schools, preschools, and libraries.

This is the week when teachers everywhere can be found having fun Cat in the Hat parties, Horton Hears parades, and planting Truffula Trees in the school garden.   It always helps to get the kids excited about reading and about finding new books to share.

Today, I want to share some fun Sr. Seuss Snacks with you.  These are perfect for any of these celebrations because they are easy to make, yet they look impressive and so adorable.  These snacks require only a few ingredients and only a few minutes of your time to prepare them.  Even better.

Dr. Seuss Snacks

I can’t wait to show you the most adorable (and easy) Dr. Seuss Snacks.  My favorite Dr. Seuss snacks are these “Green Eggs & Ham” pretzel buttons and our “Green Eggs & Ham” cookies.

One of my favorite Dr. Seuss Snacks is the adorable M&M Pretzel Buttons shared below.

Green Eggs & Ham treats are perfect for kids because they are small enough to fit into their hands, quick enough to make in a few minutes, and adorable enough to take to any party.  To be honest, I think any Dr. Seuss food would be cute & fun.

β€œDo you like green eggs and ham?” asks Sam-I-am in this Popular beginning reader book by Dr. Seuss.

“Would you like them in a house or with a mouse?  In a boat or with a goat?  On a train or in a tree?”

As we go through the Dr. Seuss book, our kids are learning new words and seeing new experiences: different places & different friends.

When I read this book, as well as Cat in the Hat, the Lorax, or any of his other books to my students,  they were always mesmerized.   Plus, there are so many activities, like making these Green Eggs & Ham pretzels, or Dr. Suess Oobleck or this Dr. Suess (non-stick) Fluffy Slime.

We made our Green Eggs & Ham Cookies, and this recipe for Green Eggs & Ham M&M Pretzel Bites.

Dr. Seuss Chocolate-Covered Pretzel Bites

This recipe makes around 30 pretzels, but you can always double or triple the recipe if you want more.   (Spoiler Alert: You’ll want more.)

I have also made Birthday Pretzel Buttons and even Valentine Pretzel Buttons so that lets you know how much I like them!  I keep making them. β™₯

What Ingredients do I need for these Dr. Seuss Snacks?

dr seuss snacks - green eggs and ham

For this recipe, you don’t need many ingredients.   That’s what makes it so easy!

How do I make Dr. Seuss pretzel snacks?

  • To start, preheat the oven to your lowest temperature.  I aim for around 200 degrees.   You want to keep it low because you are just going to be warming your pretzel buttons once they are assembled.
  • Lay around 30 pretzels onto a cookie sheet (you can line your cookie sheet with foil to make it easier to clean up once you are done.)
  • When you have the pretzels on the cookie sheet, check to make sure that they are spaced pretty evenly apart, in order to keep the pretzels from overlapping.
  • Next, you will place one white melting wafer (1 white-chocolate melt) onto each pretzel.

  • After you have a chocolate piece on each pretzel on the cookie sheet, place your cookie sheet into the oven for 2-3 minutes.

  • Check every minute to see if the chocolate is starting to melt.
  • Once the chocolate is slightly melted, pull the cookie tray out.  Working very quickly, because the chocolate will begin to harden, you need to place the green M&M’s onto the chocolates.

  • Put one M&M into the center of each piece of chocolate.  Slightly push the M&M into the chocolate.
  • Let chocolate cool completely before enjoying it!

I’d love to hear your ideas, too, because I’m sure you’ve seen a bunch!   Do you know of some great Cat in the Hat snacks or Dr. Seuss snack ideas?

  1. Hersey Kisses work well, too. Saw a post and made a Valentine’s version for church coffee hour. Same recipe except use Hersey Hugs and red M&M’s. Bake at 200Β° for 4 minutes. Don’t harden as fast as melts. Big hit! Could be done for almost any holiday.
