Welcome back to the help declutter my home series.
Here is what you missed (I recommend you read Day 1 & Day 2 before reading today’s post.  They are the foundation of what you are going to do and why you need to do it.)
Day 1- Clutter is weighing me down
Day 2-  How it affected our family & what I did about it

Yesterday you saw how I decided that enough was enough.  I was being weighed down by too much stuff and clutter and I put a stop to it.  I went from room to room with garbage bags, filled them up, and donated them.  (TONS of garbage bags- probably between 10-20).  I just piled them up in the garage and at the end, I had my Dad come over with his truck and load it up and take it away! 🙂  benefits of de-cluttering your home
How did I decide what to donate?

If I had to say “Oh- should I donate this?”  I did it!

I threw things out by the handful…  Even by the bins- I just emptied things right into the garbage bag!

I had a chair that kept breaking and my husband kept fixing it.   Its gone.

I had a laptop that kept freezing and I had it fixed four times…  its gone.

Games that they didn’t pick to play with on Family Game Night… gone.

All paperwork (school handbooks, old paperwork, medical notes)- gone!

My bags were filled with miscellaneous things:  slippers, clothes, toys, books, cards, makeup, lotions, shoes, furniture, kitchen appliances…

Yes, I had a lot of stuff.  No more than the average person, I would say, but enough to make me feel like I couldn’t keep it all neat and orderly with four kids and two adults in our house.  Enough to say that when I opened a closet, it was filled (in neatly organized bins) with STUFF.  Enough to say that I felt like I spend a lot of my day trying to clean the house.  So I got rid of a lot of it.

Yes, its gone and I feel great!

So, we know that we need to de-clutter, right?

You can do this by minimizing what you have.  Period.

Less to take care of, less to organize, less to clean…means more time, more energy, more of you to give to those that need you, love you, want to be with you.

Move onto day 4 to see the questions that you need to ask yourself and really get rid of everything.  Day 4 is all about taking action!

Hi there!

  1. Thank you for this article. We are having a community yard sale TOMORROW and I haven’t even begun to get the stuff around for it. Well… I have a very needy/demanding 10-month-old and a 3-year-old at home and I also have a six-year-old. I have been wanting to do this for so long and your article was just what I needed for motivation today so I can get as much out for the sale tomorrow. I have been keeping the kid stuff because I have younger kids and the younger ones “might play with that”. And I have been keeping a lot of the decor and collectibles because I feel guilty about all the money I have spent on them in the past and feel like I need to make some money out of them… but I just don’t have time to do Ebay as I did in the past. So… it has been sitting there. And I finally got to the point where I AM OKAY WITH LETTING IT GO even though I wouldn’t get much or any money for it. Now I just need the time to do it. My husband is on board, so tonight we are going to plow through the basement and get as much out as we can. And then what doesn’t sell tomorrow is going straight into the van and over to the goodwill. 😉

  2. Thank you so much for this! I really need to free myself from clutter. What do you do with art and school creations ?

  3. In my opinion, there are better places to donate items to than Goodwill where the CEO makes an absurd amount of money. I would encourage you to check out more mission-minded thrift stores that are truly non-profit.
