Christmas in 1985. It was simple. I had nothing to worry about but helping my mom decorate the tree. I remember being in my living room while the Christmas music was on, my brother and I putting ornaments on the tree, while my mom would clean the living room and my dad would bring up more boxes. This is my goal for my kids: Getting our house ready for Christmas without a care in the world. Celebrating Christmas like it’s 1985.
Everyone was involved… it made the preparing as fun as the actual day. Family time spent together, working as a team. Fast forward to 2017… the styles have changed, but the Christmas spirit hasn’t. My mom has pictures from every Christmas and in each picture, everyone is wearing a smile on their faces.
That’s my goal- to have my kids remembering Christmas like I did… a joyful time where we loved being together. I don’t want to be someone who is stressed about the house, but instead a person happy to host friends and have a clean home for their family. I love to have cookies baking and my favorite candles burning. These things bring me joy because it puts a smile on their faces (and on mine) 🙂
This year, I wanted to really set the mood for the holidays, so instead of just decorating the foyer and living room, I put a little bit of Christmas into every room. The key to making the decorations look beautiful is starting with a clean slate. home to my house, where my mom kept it clean and clutter-free. I’ve always tried to keep our house the same way.
My mom always kept our house clean and clutter-free, and I’ve always tried to keep our house the same way.
Starting in the living room, I dusted the shelves in the room (I’m only 4’11, so while I can’t actually see the top of these shelves, I know that the dust & pet hair finds it’s way up there.) I think that cleaning should be done in the most efficient way, because I want to spend more time enjoying the things that I love than cleaning up the things that we like. So, I used the Clorox® Triple Action Dust Wipes. They eliminate pet allergens and even remove hair from furniture and carpet.
It also works so well on blinds and shutters. I love when our shutters are open and the light comes through, but I also love when our Christmas wreaths are the one other side of that window.
For the Christmas tree in this room, I decorated in burlap and white. It is simple and gives that modern farmhouse feel.
Once the room was cleaned and everything was ready, I loved the way it looked: Fresh, clean & bright, ready for us to enjoy and make memories around the tree.
My key to decorating, for Christmas or any other time, is to pick inexpensive things and pair them with the things that I really love. I bought inexpensive sofas with white slipcovers, but the shelves and most of the pillows in the rooms were custom made.
My key to keeping everything looking nice, even when they are no longer new, is cleaning often and with products that I know were made for that purpose, like those Clorox® Triple Action Dust Wipes that I mentioned earlier.
In the kitchen, I knew that I wanted to use the big windows to my advantage. I love when rooms feel bright and lit with sunlight, especially the kitchen. The kitchen is the heart of the home and that rings especially true in our house. With four kids, someone is always in the kitchen. I wanted it to feel just as special as the other rooms in the house. I prepared all of our holiday things in there (like the beautiful winter-scene cutting board that my friend, Julia, gave me for Christmas 15 years ago).
I washed our napkins ahead of time to brighten them from last year. I cleaned out our cabinets and found my Christmas plates (and organized my normal plates while I was in there)
I added a few wreaths, with simple burlap ribbon, on the windows and pantry door.
For the kitchen table, I found this long wooden basket and added a few glass bottles. The kids loved it & wanted to help. They went into the yard and cut fresh pine to put in the glasses. Each of the kids cut a few pieces and we put them together to create this look:
As you can see (in the background), I was cleaning in this room, too. 🙂
We keep Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes in every room, as you already know. I like knowing that they remove bacteria, kitchen grease and 99.9% of germs that can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours, so I use them often.
A clean, welcoming home for the holidays comes first. What comes next is everything.
Decorating for the holidays is all about spending time with family. The kids love to decorate and help. They clean their rooms & decorate them, as well. Each of our kids has their own mini-tree, on their dressers.
Even Allie’s playhouse is decorated. We spend a lot of time in there. Her brothers & dad even MADE a Christmas tree for her using leftover garland. 🙂
All in all, Christmas is about those gathered around the tree. It’s about being together and remembering the reasons that you love to spend time together. Make your house a place where you love to be, where your family loves to come home to.
How do you set the stage for making memories in their home during the holidays?
