This school lunch tip is probably a little silly to be sharing, but let me tell you that it has helped our kiddos so much!
How to take the juice out before opening it (avoid the mess)
Our kids love to take fruit cups to school, but they won’t take them because when they open them, the juice gets all over the place and makes a mess.  (I open them over the sink at home).  They are embarrassed, so they just leave them at home instead.   I have started this new little tip that has changed that.  I actually drain the juice without opening the fruit cup.

Are you ready to learn this super-easy trick?
A cup of oranges in a plastic container with juice in it and text above it.
First- wash the top of the container (because you are going to make a hole into it and you don’t want to spread any germs from the top into the cup)

Take something sharp (I use a skewer- make sure that it is clean) and poke a TINY hole into the top of the juice cup.

Drain it.
A hand draining juice from a container of fruit snacks.

A container of fruit with directions on how to drain the juice.

Cover the hole with tape (be sure that it is going to stick.)

A plastic fruit cup with tape on it and text over it.
That’s all there is to it!  It makes it easy to take anywhere, without worrying about a mess.

  1. This is a genius idea! I always worry the kids are going to make a huge mess with these at school and now I don’t have too! Thanks for the tip!

  2. Great tip. I normally open it, drain it and put it in a different container because my son always hates to try to open it and get juice on himself. But please don’t send peanuts to school with your child’s lunch. So many kids allergic. Make it safe for them.

  3. Oh my goodness! Why did I never think of this???
I am forever getting juice all over the place when I open those containers on picnic lunches with the kids.
    Definitely going to try this!

  4. why do you send peanuts as a snack to school? That’s an allergen that can kill some
    Of
Your child’s schoolmates? In Canada all our schools are peanut free!

    1. Oh- no way! In our schools they have one peanut-free classroom per grade (so out of 9 classrooms, one is peanut free).

    2. Not all schools in Canada are peanut free. Many schools in Canada are “nut aware” but no school can be completely “peanut free” if parents are the ones packing the lunches. Schools can take every precaution to take the allergies of students into consideration but the margin of human error makes it impossible to call a school peanut free unless lunches are supplied.

  5. This is great! I am typically the one splashing the juice out of the cups. My daughter starts school in September, so I am looking for all the tips I can get. Great post, thank you!
