5 steps to a peaceful bedroom

Have a peaceful bedroom with these five steps

First things first:
Step #1- make your bed today!
This is, by far, the easiest way to make your home feel “neat” and put-together!

How do you feel when your bed is not made? When my bed is unmade, I usually have a Pajama day. I don’t feel like getting dressed, I don’t feel like cleaning the rest of my house. It all starts with your bed! I really try to make it a priority to make my bed in the mornings.

make your bed
This is a rule that my Mom made when we were little and that I have made in my house. My mom’s house is always clean and put together (& beautiful!) Making the bed is her first step of the day, as well. This is one of the first things you will learn with flylady (see my post on flydady) if you need a cleaning schedule.

Now that you have that part covered…

Step #2- clear away the clutter. Do you have a pile of things that you leave on your dresser? Give yourself ten minutes to get rid of that “hotspot”. Just put those things away without getting distracted & starting on something new. The next time that you get ten minutes to spare, move onto the next “hotspot” in your bedroom (Maybe its under your bed? Maybe its on your nightstand?)

Step #3
Paint the room a peaceful color. What color speaks to you? For us, it was the sky and ocean. I love those calming blues. We bought about five paint samples and decided on this one: Pelican. (It is a gray/blue that sometimes even looks white). Normally I use the mistinted paints to save money (see that post here) but we knew what color we wanted for this room, so we just paid the retail price. (well- 30% off)

Step #4- Pick a bedding to match. I went with a white duvet cover. I can change the room around it, if I want to. I love white. I have an all white room that I will be sharing with you tomorrow. It feels so serene to me, so this room of blues and whites was just what I wanted. I bought the sheet set and matching accessories and began decorating.
TIP: To have the sheet showing, I use three sheets on my bed.
1- the fitted sheet
2- a regular blue or white (whatever color- no one will see this one) flat sheet – this is the that lays on us when we sleep
3- the decorative sheet. We put this one on the bed upside down, so that when you “fold it back” over the comforter (see the picture ) it shows the decorative part.

Step 5- Decorate the room with little touches.
We bought the bench – a wooden bench- at wal-mart and used the fabric to cover it.
We have a few wedding gifts in our room (vases) and a few pictures & paintings.

I hope that helped to make your bedroom more peaceful- somewhere that you want to be. It should feel calming when you walk into it. 🙂

Don’t forget to teach your kids the same things that you are doing:
When asking your kids to make their beds, first you must teach them.
I have shown my kids to take the pillow off, pull the sheet up, pull the comforter up and put the pillows back on. It isn’t perfect, but if they try, it is good enough for me! I can tell when they don’t give it a good effort & they will have to re-make it.
I am a little more lax about this on school days, but on the weekends, it is a must.

It makes their rooms look & feel much better, too!
