did as children

What did you do as a child that you want to share with your kids?  There are so many times that I catch myself saying, “Oh!  I used to do that, too!” with our kids.  Here are my 5 favorite things:

1- Having sleepovers on our back porch
child sleep

We had a screened in porch, and I used to love sleeping out there with my friends.  It was on the second story, so it was very safe.  I often tell our kids about it, and now that my husband, dad and brother built a screened-in porch on our house, we can do this, too.  Another option would be to camp out in the backyard.  I’m going to lay it all out there that I am NOT a camper, but the kids would love it!

2- Drawing roads with chalk and riding our bikes around, pretending to be grownups driving cars
chalk

In our cul-de-sac, my neighbors and I drew stop signs, red lights, stores, houses, etc. … with chalk.  We drew streets with the yellow dashes down the middle and big intersections.  It was so much fun.

3- Eating dinner as a family A box of Elliio\'s Pizza sitting on a wooden table.

As soon as we were home from school and my dad was home from work, we would have dinner.  Every night around the same time, we sat together as a family.  We would eat whatever my mom made (I have to say that I really hated the nights where spinach was the vegetable, which is funny because I really love it now!).  I loved when we would have pizza nights on Fridays.  We used to eat Ellio’s Pizza, and I give it to our kids now (It has been around for over 5 decades).  My mom liked to cook it for us because all Ellio’s Products are made with real ingredients – like 100% real cheese and no artificial flavors.  I like to give it to my kids because it’s a delicious and convenient meal solution, great as an afternoon snack or a quick dinner.  The crust is crispy, the cheese is gooey, and the sauce is sweet, just 10 minutes in the oven and I have 4 happy, satisfied kids!

You can find Ellio’s Pizza using their Ellio’s Pizza Store Locator.  And be sure to check them out on Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter.

4- Selling friendship bracelets

I think our kids could make 20 rainbow loom bracelets in a few hours (They do them so quickly; it takes me an hour to make one!).  This is a fun way to spice up the “lemonade stand” idea.  Our kids have even sold paper fans … and thankfully people bought them, putting huge smiles on our kids’ faces!

5. Reading a great book with my mom before bed.

read

I can remember reading Little Women with my mom before bed.  I can even remember the bookmark with the blue ribbon that she would place inside to hold our place.  I remember her laying beside me, on my flower pillow, to read it.   I remember my touch lamp (did you have one of those) with flowers on it, that she would tap three times to make it bright and then tap once more to turn it off after she tucked me in.    I love to read chapter books to our kids before bed for the same reason- the memories that it will create and the love for reading that it will enhance.

So- tell me some things that YOU remember from your childhood!   Here are a few favorite games that I remember playing as a child:

  1. My husband and I are having our first baby in August, and we have already had this discussion– what things from our childhood we want to bring into our children’s lives. The big problem– we are living/working in Asia, and life is much different here than where we grew up! Even though we have good careers here in Asia, we have thought out a 5-year plan so we can raise our family with the same kinds of opportunities we had.

    1. That’s so great that you are already planning!
