Ok- I love to update and decorate our house!  If you asked Mickey, my husband, he would tell you that I am like that book “If you give a mouse a muffin”.  In the book, the author says “If you give a mouse a muffin, he’s going to want a glass of milk to go with it.”   For me, its more like “If you give Becky a pillow, she’s going to want a new couch to go with it.”   hahaha!   He is never surprised to hear me say “Oh!  I have a decorating idea!” when I look at a room full of things that seem dated and get an idea to make it work in a new way.

A variety of repurposed items made into new items.

Here are some fun ideas!

  1. Retro message board
A bed frame repurposed into a entry way decoration.

To make a DIY retro message board, like Donna did here,  you need the spring from an old mattress.   She cleaned the rust from the spring with a wire brush and she put a clear coat on it.  You could always repaint it the color of your choice, too!    Clothespins come in handy when you want to stick notes on it and you can also use hangers to hang some items that you need everyday like a coat or a scarf. You may think that your old mattress is taking up space and serves no purpose but you need to think again.

  1. Ladder as a bookshelfladder
  1. Rustic look
A bathroom cabinet with numerous drawers and double sinks and mirrors.

You can make any home more unique by taking furniture and putting it in unexpected places.  I would never have thought to use 3 dressers side by side like this!

  1. Reusing cabinet doors
A purple cabinet door with three glass door knobs and text across it.

When you remodel your home, you’re many times left with stuff that can come in handy, like cabinet doors! This one, found on Hometalk, is beautiful and so creative.  Paint it, add beautiful letters and some knobs and now you have a place to hang your favorite things.

  1. Storage containers

The tins from food cans are a great way to store things. To give them a new look, like they did here on indulgy, you can decoupage paper onto them. Now you can fill this container with pretty much anything!

  1. Headboard

To furnish your guest bedroom in an inexpensive manner all you need to do is to repaint an old door the color that goes with the color scheme of your room and let it dry before putting it up. When it’s dry you’ll have a very amazing and new looking headboard on hand.  This one cost about $25.
How to:  Saw it down to size, add chair rail molding on top, add paint, let dry.

  1. Paint a sisal rug
    paint a sisal rug

Painting a sisal rug is a great (cheap) option.  Keep in mind that it is time consuming, but the end result is beautiful.  Take a plain sisal rug, stencil on a design and go to town!  Paint the inside a deep gray and paint the stencil part white.   Area rugs always tie a room together! Beautiful handmade Persian wholesale rugs can be found online from reliable sources.  This one is my favorite.
